{"id":226,"date":"2010-07-28T23:15:22","date_gmt":"2010-07-29T03:15:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/docs.futureinnovate.net\/?page_id=226"},"modified":"2011-02-22T20:38:34","modified_gmt":"2011-02-23T01:38:34","slug":"6-1-background","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/docs.futureinnovate.net\/?page_id=226","title":{"rendered":"6.1 Background"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Decisions can be categorized as \u201cunstructured\u201d and \u201cstructured\u201d.\u00a0 Intuitive decisions by executives are typically unstructured.\u00a0 By contrast, a structured decision is typically defined as one where the evaluation criteria, the decision data, and the decision process are all pre-defined.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluating R&amp;D or innovation-related projects pose three specific challenges:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Selection decisions require making assumptions about the future<\/li>\n<li>Considerable technical expertise is typically required to assess available data and apply evaluation criteria<\/li>\n<li>A method must exist to efficiently integrate the insights of multiple experts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The ProGrid\u00ae methodology was specifically designed to address these challenges. It was developed by Dr. Clement (Clem) W. Bowman, with the assistance of other members of the ProGrid \u00ae team, including Ron McCullough.\u00a0 The principles behind ProGrid \u00ae are discussed in <em>Intangibles: Exploring the Full Depth of Issues<\/em>, by C.W. Bowman, published in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>The ProGrid<strong>\u00ae<\/strong> Decision Methodology was initially developed to assist in making resource allocation decisions in an innovation \/ R&amp;D context, building on Clem Bowman&#8217;s experience as Chair of the Alberta Government\u2019s Technology and Research Advisory Committee (where he coordinated the technology efforts of some 14 government departments and agencies) and as President of the Alberta Research Council &#8211; a government-owned applied research and development corporation. Dr. Bowman oversaw a quadrupling of non-government contract revenues from $5 million per year to $20 million annually and was the Vice-President responsible for the Research Centre at Esso Petroleum Canada. Dr. Bowman was the founding chairman of the Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority (AOSTRA), a crown corporation of the Alberta Government.
